The Raven

Ravenwing is a mechanical bird made of paper clay over a wire armature– finished with acrylics, heavy black lace, feathers and a crown of quartz crystal arrowheads.

Would you like to see it fly!?!?!  Check it out here.

The base is made from a tin can covered with mosaics and instead of traditional grout, resin clay was used to hold the items in place and fill the spaces in between.

A found lamp part is attached to the base at the bottom.

We are so proud that our raven was featured on the very popular site for all things mechanical and wondrous– The Automata Blog.

It was also recently in a gallery group show “Black & White” along with another automata piece we made entitled ‘3 Bird House‘.

    Hello,

My friend Andy Cooperman told me to take a look at your site. I enjoyed it very much. You may already know about Arthur Ganson’s sculpture, but in case you don’t go to ArthurGanson.com. He is an amazing kinetic artist.

    Best,

    Don Friedlich

      Hello Don!

Thanks for stopping by. I also very much enjoyed seeing your work most especially the Magnification and Translucence series.

I am teaching a technique at some art retreats this year that explores the opaque and translucent properties possible in resin for interesting effect which you can see here

I work a lot with optical lenses as well so those are all things we both like to use in our work.

I do know of Arthur Ganson but if I didn’t I would be so indebted to you for telling me about him as I am a huge fan of his. Perhaps you would be interested in seeing a piece I did on him recently

Thanks so much for your kind comments and I hope you will visit again sometime soon!
